Johnson City, Tenn. -- Kate Steidle piled up 20 kills and 16 digs as the East Tennessee State volleyball team defeated Wofford in four games Sunday afternoon. The Bucs won with scores of 30-19, 25-30, 31-29, 30-27.
With the win, the Bucs improve to 3-1 in Southern Conference play (6-1 overall). The Lady Terriers fall to 2-1 in the Southern Conference (9-3 overall).
East Tennessee jumped out to an early advantage, capturing the first game easily. In the second, Wofford turned the tables with a team kill percentage of .308, gathering the five-point victory. Game three saw many lead changes. Wofford led, 28-26, before the Bucs called a time out. After the break, ETSU outscored the Lady Terriers 5-1 to secure the win. In the final game, the Bucs built a lead midway through and managed to hold off Wofford's attempts at a comeback.
Steidle led all players in the match. She was aided in the win by Carey Cavanaugh's 45 assists and 20 digs, as well as 12 kills and 18 digs from Amber Ciskowski.
The Lady Terriers were led by senior Cristy Carter, who picked up 13 kills and 18 digs in the match. Teammate Andrea Duke had six aces, six kills, 15 digs, and three blocks on the afternoon, while Janna Webb chipped in nine kills and four digs.
East Tennessee State will face Appalachian State Tuesday a 7 p.m. from Brooks Gym in their first home match of the season.
