Bucs Defeat Georgia State In First Match of Winthrop Tournament

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State held off Georgia State 3-2 (30-22, 30-17, 24-30, 27-30, 15-13) in the opening match of the 2001 Microtel Inn & Suites Invitational hoosted by Winthrop University which concludes Saturday with four more matches. In the opening match, East Tennessee bolted out to a 2-0 lead, but had to battle back in the fifth game to win against Georgia State. The Buccaneers placed four players in double digit kills as Karen Freeburg and Kate Steidle led with 15 each followed by Amber Ciskowski with 12 and Lissa Allen at 10. Georgia State's Molly Sapp led all hitters in the match with 19 kills while Anna Popenko and Randi Van Dam had 12 each for the losers.
