JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 2, 2009) - After taking first place Lipscomb to five sets for the first time this season, the ETSU volleyball team saw its upset bid fall short against the Bisons Friday night in Brooks Gym, 3-2 (15-25, 25-20, 12-25, 25-14, 11-15).

"The girls did a fantastic job," said head coach Lindsey Devine. "We can build on this because Lipscomb is a very talented team that is full of great players. I think we did a good job of controlling their offense and playing strong defense."

Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Bucs offensively posting her third double-double of the season as she had 15 kills and 12 assists. Desiree Dyck (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) also had a strong performance with 13 kills in the match, while McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) tallied nine kills and seven blocks.

Amanda Youell (Middleburg, Fla.) had one of her best all-around performances of the season as she totaled seven kills, 45 assists, nine digs, five blocks and hit .583 on the night. Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Mich.) led ETSU defensively posting 15 digs and five kills.

"I think Whitney was good at the net tonight, and it was good to see Desiree come out be solid on the outside," Devine said. "I think our team showed a lot of character, and we are going to take that build on it. We expect that kind of performance from ourselves every night."

The Bisons jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set. ETSU narrowed the lead to 13-10 after kills by Youell and Dyck, but Lipscomb went on a 9-1 run to take a 22-11 advantage. The Bisons closed out the set 25-15 on a Kaycee Green kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Buccaneers answered in the second set jumping out to a 7-3 lead of their own. ETSU extended its lead to 18-9 after kills by Dyck and Barber, but the Bisons rallied late using a 7-2 run to cut the ETSU lead to 24-20. The Bucs won the set 25-20 on the next play to even the match at the break.

In the third set, Lipscomb regained momentum going out in front 8-4 early in the set. ETSU cut the Bisons lead to 9-7, but an 11-3 run by Lipscomb gave the Bisons ten points lead. The Bisons took the third set 25-12 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

ETSU came out strong in the fourth set as the Bucs were ahead early, 7-3. Lipscomb cut the Buccaneer lead to 9-6, but that was as close as the Bisons would get in the set. The Bucs used a 10-2 run to close out the set winning it 25-14 on a Barber kill.

The final set saw Lipscomb take an early 6-3 advantage after a couple Buccaneer attack errors. ETSU battled back though taking three-straight points to tie the set at 6-all. After three more ties, The Bisons went on a 5-1 run to close win the set 15-11.

ETSU (5-10, 4-3 A-Sun) is back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. as the Bucs host Belmont in Brooks Gym.   For more information on Buccaneer volleyball and all other athletic news, please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
