SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 3, 2014) – After a record-setting performance this past weekend, ETSU senior libero Katie Muey (Alexandria, Ind.) was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as the league office released its weekly honors on Monday.
Muey, who received the award for a third time this season, broke ETSU’s career digs record in a thrilling five-set win over Chattanooga on Saturday night inside Brooks Gym. The Alexandria, Ind. native surpassed Tish Wilson (1991-94) for the most digs in program history as Muey moved her career total to 1,701.
For the week, Muey averaged 5.12 digs per set (41 total) in two matches for the Blue and Gold. Muey led all players with 17 digs Friday night at UNCG, while following that up with a match-high 24 digs against the Mocs on Saturday. Muey needed 13 digs to break the program record on Saturday and accomplished the feat midway through the third set. The Buccaneer senior libero had 10 of her 24 digs in the third frame against Chattanooga.
Muey is the second player this season to receive three Defensive Player of the Week awards, joining UNCG’s Katherine Santiago.
Muey and the Bucs return to action Tuesday night when ETSU hosts Western Carolina at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.
