JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 7, 2014) – Each week during the season, members of the ETSU volleyball team will be featured in a "Q&A" segment on ETSUBucs.com.
The next student-athlete profile is junior Jessica Schafer (Dekalb, Ill.). Schafer is a three-year member of the ETSU volleyball team and has been a Dean’s List selection in each of her first four semester at ETSU. Schafer has played in 62 matches for the Blue and Gold, while she has registered a career-high five blocks three times for the Bucs and totaled 56 blocks in her career.
During the preseason, the players came up with the questions, which can be found below, and each of them submitted their answers. Below are the responses by Schafer:
If you could witness any event (past or present) what would it be? Why?
I would have loved to witness the “Fab 5” win the Olympic gold medal in gymnastics back in 2012. I love watching the Olympics and believe that Gabby, McKayla, Aly, Kyla, and Jordyn had fire, passion, and determination when they competed; it would have been very inspiring to watch.
What is your favorite thing to do off the court with your teammates?
I absolutely love getting our team together and having dinner. It’s always an exciting, eventful time that leaves lasting memories.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I want to go to New Zealand, because many of my friends have said that it is a gorgeous place to tour and has a lot of outdoor adventures – such as exploring the emerald lakes, alpine meadows, and volcanic landscapes of Tongariro National Park. I also want to visit the secluded coves and white-sanded beaches of The Coromandel, also located in New Zealand.
What is a non-athletic accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Academics is extremely important to me, therefore, I take pride in the fact that I have made the Dean’s List every semester at ETSU.
Who is the best dancer on the team?
Definitely Merf (Meredith Hardy)… no doubt about it.
What is your favorite quote?
“Carpe diem”
What is something that not many people know about you?
I can play the piano.
What movie can you watch over and over and never get tired of?
“The Parent Trap”
If you can hung out with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
I would want to hang out with the classy and successful, Kate Middleton, because I would want to hear what it’s like to live her life as the Duchess of Cambridge and how it feels to be married to the cutest prince, Prince William.
If you could pick any profession in life (regardless of education, money, judgment, or training) what would it be? What's stopping you?
I would love to become a nurse, because I not only get to interact with individuals, but I would also be able to work with medicine, anatomy, and science aspect.
What do you think is an important rule to live by?
With anything and everything you do, give 100%.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, because it is the one holiday that my family from both my mom and dad’s side are together in one place.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
1) Earn my masters in speech pathology and audiology
2) Visit New Zealand
3) Make my family proud
What is a talent you don't have that you wish you did?
I wish I had the voice of an angel... aka Eryn Samuel’s voice
What is one piece of advice you would give a young athlete who aspires to be a college athlete?
Work hard… Elite athletes don’t take any time off. If you really want it, you will do everything in your power to make your goals happen.
If you had not pursued volleyball, which sport would you have pursued, and why?
I would have pursued gymnastics, because I think all the twirling, dancing, and jumping looks fun!
Schafer and the Bucs return to action tonight when ETSU takes on Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C.
