A LOOK AT ETSU
The Bucs are 2-0 entering the weekend after sweeping the season series at Furman earlier this month. The Blue and Gold defeated the Paladins 3-2 and 3-1. In the two contests Olivia Cunningham (Knoxville, Tenn.) logged 37 kills, averaging 4.11 kills per set for a combined .280 hitting percentage. In the first match, the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year set a career high with 24 kills. Additionally, she currently is tied for the league lead with .56 aces per set.
Sanne Maring (Groningen, The Netherlands) was strong in her first career starts as a Buc tallying 21 kills on 46 swings to hit .326 which sits third in the SoCon. She netted a Conference Defensive Player of the Week accolade with 13 blocks, averaging 1.44 blocks per set. Maring set a career high with eight blocks in ETSU’s four-set victory over Furman on Feb. 1.
The Bucs led the league with three Preseason All-SoCon selections. Emily Arnold (Louisville, Ky.), Cunningham and Lauren Hatch (Homewood, Ill.) were all named to the SoCon All-Freshman team in 2019 and the accolades continued to roll in for the sophomores prior to the spring season. The three accolades are the most on the preseason team for ETSU since the Blue and Gold rejoined the SoCon in 2014.
This year’s roster features eight returners and seven newcomers to the squad. The returners include five starters from 2019’s team (Cunningham, Hatch, Arnold, Sara Esposito (Venizia, Italy) and Lundyn Coffman (Nolensville, Tenn.). Coach Jenkins & Co. welcomed five freshmen to the team and two transfers (Maring from Hosftra and Sydney Allen (Gaffney, S.C.) from Converse College).
A LOOK AT UNCG
UNCG is 0-4 to begin the Spring 2021 season. The Spartans have suffered three five-set losses, two to Chattanooga and one to Mercer. UNCG also fell in four sets to the Bears. The Spartans have won the first set in each of their last three matches, but have not won the second set all season. The Spartans are led on the floor by Grey Breen who is hitting .280 this season with 26 kills. No other player has more than one kill and is hitting above .250.
This will be the 37th match all-time between the two teams. The Bucs lead the Spartans 26-10 and are 10-6 in Johnson City.
