Wofford Hands ETSU First 3-0 Setback of the Season
Monday, February 22, 2021

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 22, 2021) — After suffering their first loss of the season yesterday, the ETSU Volleyball team was unable to get back in the win column on Monday evening inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Bucs fell in three sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-10) to the Wofford Terriers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-15 WOF): Unlike the first set in yesterday’s contest, Wofford had the lead from start to finish in the first frame. The Terriers jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. The Bucs kept it within five points until Wofford went on a late run 6-0 run to close out the set. Wofford hit .276 in the set and held ETSU to a .029 attack percentage. Both teams had three blocks in the frame while Wofford had a 13-8 edge in kills.

Set 2 (25-21 WOF): Wofford got off to a quick 4-0 start in the second starting with the serve. ETSU went on a 6-2 run, their largest of the match to tie the set at six early in the frame. Down 17-12, ETSU used two kills and an ace to cut its deficit to two. Wofford brought its lead back to three, up 20-17, but the Bucs didn’t count themselves out. The Blue and Gold got back within one at 21-20, but were unable to take the lead. The Terriers won the set on back-to-back aces by Emily Hodsdon. Both teams recorded 14 kills in the set, while Wofford had the edge with a .303 attack clip compared to ETSU’s .211 percentage.

Set 3 (25-10 WOF): The Terriers began the third set with a 2-0 lead and led by two until it was 7-4. After an eight-minute pause in action due to a rotation error, Wofford stepped back behind the service line and recorded five straight to force a Buccaneer timeout. The Terriers’ nine-point run was halted by a service error. ETSU was unable to regain momentum after the stoppage of play as the Terriers stopped the Bucs from winning back-to-back points since the pause. Wofford hit .565 in the third frame with 14 kills and just one error.
