Bucs add depth at each position with latest signing class 

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 29, 2022) – ETSU head coach Benavia Jenkins announced six signees to her program on Tuesday as part of the team’s National Signing Day period, including an outside hitter, two liberos, two middles and one setter.

The first signee announced by the program was outside hitter Sophia Carlson, who will enroll at ETSU and join the team in the Spring. The five others are now official as of this week and will join the team in the fall.

 

Sophia Carlson — Outside Hitter — Green Hope H.S. — Cary, N.C.

Accomplishments: First team all-conference, Top 150 player for three years, MEQ all-tournament team

Quote from Coach Jenkins: “Sophia is a special one for us. She was the first to commit in our 2023 class. Her visit to campus was love at first site. She will bring a dynamic arm, knowledge of the game, and the flexibility to play on either pin. We are excited to have her in the gym this upcoming spring. She is going to have a significant impact in multiple positions when she arrives in Johnson City.”

Alex Kreutzmann — Setter — Hamilton H.S. — Menomonee Falls, Wis.

Accomplishments: First team all-conference, GMC Scholar-Athlete, AVCA All-American Watchlist 

Quote from Coach Jenkins: “Alex is a gym rat that loves the game more than any recruit I have ever met. I am especially happy about this because she’s a setter with great ball control. Her goal is to make everyone around her better and to compete, no matter what it takes. Alex will be fun to watch and could be one of the best setters to come out of ETSU. She is an incredible student and fits great with the team.”

Quote from Kreutzmann: “I can’t imagine a better place to continue playing the sport that I love for four more years. I can’t wait to be a Buc!”

 

Brooklyn Allison — Libero — Spain Park H.S. — Birmingham, Ala.

Accomplishments: 2022 AVCA All-America Watchlist, 2022 North/South Team Selection, 2x All-Region First Team in 2021 and 2022, 2x All-Over The Mountain Team in 2021 and 2022, ASHVCA and Super All-State selection in 2021, AVCA Phenom List in 2021, all-county, all-tournament and Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2021, 2x All-South Metro first team in 2020 and 2021, National Honors Society.

Melanie Morris — Libero — Heritage H.S. — Maryville, Tenn.

Accomplishments: 3x All-District first team as a sophomore, junior and senior, 2022 Libero of the Year award,  2021 Blount County All-Tournament pick and AVCA Phenom List, 2020 AVCA Watch List, became all-time kill leader at her school during her sophomore season, was an all-tournament MVP as a freshman, National Honors Society.

College volleyball has always been a dream and I’m thankful for this opportunity to get to compete and play the sport I love. I plan to work hard athletically and apply myself academically to make the most of my time here.”

 

Gianna Blair — Middle Blocker — Saint Mary’s H.S. — Lancaster, N.Y.

Accomplishments: 2x All-Western New York team, 2x All-Catholic first team and 1x second team, 3x MMHSAA champion, 2x state champion, served two seasons as team captain, Dean’s list and honor roll selection, was named the top blocker in all of New York in 2021.

Quote from Coach Jenkins: “Gianna is one of the most underrated athletes in her class. She brings has upside in the middle standing at 6-foot-3. She has the tools to be an elite middle in the SoCon. She is long with a nice arm. With the help of our strength program, I think Gianna could be one of the top middles or opposites to come through ETSU.”

Rori Hanken — Middle Blocker — Sacred Heart Griffin H.S. — Springfield, Ill.

Accomplishments: All-tournament player and team honors, Team USA participant.

Quote from Coach Jenkins: “I am excited about this one. She has a lot of energy and likes to talk. She has a really nice arm and loves the slide attack. She is still learning the game and its speed, however she’s a dynamic player. It will be interesting to see her play in many different positions.”

Quote from Hanken: “I am beyond excited to play volleyball at ETSU! I’m grateful for this opportunity given to me and can’t wait to learn and grow from this program. I plan to work hard academically and athletically and get the most out of this experience.”
