Averaged double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds in ETSU’s two wins this past week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 17, 2015) – After leading the ETSU women’s basketball team to a pair of victories this past week, redshirt senior forward Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) has been selected as the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Mitchell recorded a double-double average of 11.0 points and 16.0 rebounds per game in helping the Blue & Gold move to 10-1 league play. The senior was the leading rebounder in both contests from Feb. 14 – 16 and also made 9-of-18 field goal attempts and canned all four free throw tries in the two contests.
In a 51-40 home win against Western Carolina on Feb. 14, the forward grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds in only 27 minutes of play. Following, in an 84-66 road victory at UNCG on Feb. 16, the veteran powered her way to an impressive double-double featuring season highs of 20 points and 19 rebounds. This double-double performance from Mitchell is the senior’s seventh of the season and 33rd of her career.
The Georgia native currently leads the league in rebounding at 9.5 per game and is second in the conference in field goal percentage at 56 percent per contest. In addition, Mitchell continues to climb the ETSU all-time scoring list with a current total of 1,277 career points which places her ninth overall on the list.
This is the second SoCon weekly honor for Mitchell and the fifth conference weekly honor of her career dating back to ETSU in the Atlantic Sun.
Mitchell and three additional seniors will be honored on Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 21, when the Bucs conclude home conference action by welcoming Mercer to Brooks Gym at 2 p.m.
