Women’s head basketball coach Brittney Ezell announces signing of 6-1 forward Morgan Martin

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 4, 2015) – ETSU head women’s basketball coach Brittney Ezell announced Thursday the signing of Morgan Martin (Davenport, Iowa), a former Eastern Illinois Panther student-athlete. Martin will sit out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules, and will have three years of eligibility starting in the 2016-17 season.

Martin, a 6-1 forward, started her high school career at Quincy Notre Dame High School in Illinois. She helped lead the program to back-to-back IHSA Class 2A state championships. Earning All-State honors as a sophomore, Martin averaged 9.6 points and 4.7 rebounds on a team that finished 33-1 and was ranked in the ESPN Fab 50. During her two year stint at Quincy she helped the team post a 64-2 overall record.

“Morgan is a passionate competitor and a winner on and off the court,” said Ezell. “Morgan possesses the right size, build, work ethic and skill level to be impactful for our program in the Southern Conference.”

Martin spent her final two years at John F. Kennedy High School in Iowa, helping the Cougars to the Class 5A State Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals and earning third team All-State honors. Her junior year was cut short due to injury, but averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds in limited action.

At Eastern Illinois, Martin played in 27 games off the bench, scoring in 15 of those games with a career high six points against Austin Peay.

While she saw limited action at Eastern Illinois, Martin looks to build on her success at ETSU.

“I’m very excited to continue my academic and athletic career at ETSU,” said Martin. “I felt very comfortable and at home during my visit, and after meeting with Coach Ezell, it was clear to me that she not only cared about my athletic abilities but who I was as a student and a person.”

In the classroom, Martin graduated Valedictorian (4.20 GPA) from John F. Kennedy. Due to her academic performance Martin was named Academic All-State and was a recipient of the US Army National Scholar Athlete Award. She intends to major in pre-medicine at ETSU.

“As a pre-med major, the allure and prestige of the Quillen College of Medicine helped us showcase to Morgan that ETSU has the best of both worlds when it comes to academics and athletics,” said Ezell.

Martin is the daughter of two former collegiate athletes as her father Sam Poe played baseball at Clemson University from 1958-1962. Her mother Denise Martin played softball at Illinois State from 1977-1981.
