KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 14, 2022) – The ETSU women’s cross country team put together a successful showing in its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championship. Led by senior Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), the Buccaneer women finished runner-up at the VertCross Invitational, which was held Friday evening the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.

Schwarz enjoyed her best collegiate finish in a cross country race as she placed third overall with a time of 21:41.9 on the 6K course. The Oak Ridge, Tenn. native hovered around the top three spots the entire race as she clocked in at the 1.5K mark in 5:21 and moved back into third at the 4.2K where she had a time of 15:28.0. From there, Schwarz stayed in third at the 5K check point (18:14.5) and ran 3:27.4 over the final 1K to record her personal best time on the 6K course.

Likewise, fellow senior Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tenn.), also had her best finish as she placed sixth overall with a time of 22:09.1 – marking a PR for a 6K race. Lord was in 22nd at the 1.5K checkpoint and jumped into 12th at the 2.5K mark. From there, Lord stayed in that position until a strong closing finish as she passed five runners over the final 1K, posting a time of 3:29.6 over that closing distance.
