ETSU women finish third as Stetson sweeps A-Sun
Wednesday, April 15, 2009

DELAND, Fla. (April 15, 2009) - The ETSU women's golf team was unable to defend its 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference championship, as host Stetson made the most of its home-course advantage to sweep both the 2009 team and individual titles Wednesday at the Victoria Hills Golf Club.

A day after Campbell set a new single round conference record with a 290 team score, the Hatters bettered that mark by two strokes, firing a final round score of even-par 288 to overtake the Camels and win the team championship by two strokes at 881. While Stetson received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals, the Hatters did not stop there, as Stetson's Danielle Jackson made it a sweep by posting a three-round score of 213 (71-73-69) to take the individual title by two strokes over teammate Lauren Cate.

The Buccaneers, who are currently the conference's highest ranked team at 47th in the nation, finished 23 strokes off the pace set by Stetson and 21 back of second place Campbell. Individually, ETSU's top effort came from true freshman Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria), who finished third on the leaderboard at 217 for the event, while junior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) finished seventh at 224.

Other ETSU results included a tied for 18th at 232 by junior Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport), while senior Lucy Gould (Bargoed, Wales) and the 2008 A-Sun individual champion Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) both finished tied for 28th.

The Buccaneers will actually return to action for their final regular season event of the spring on April 18 at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. The team will then wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA regionals, which will be announced later this month.
