KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (Oct. 27, 2008) - Freshman Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) fired a personal best and the lowest round of the day, posting a 2-under-par 70 in the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday at the Oak Point Golf Club. The second round - which also began on Monday - was postponed due to darkness.

Along with Vizcarrondo's first place standing on the leaderboard, the ETSU women's golf team also got strong efforts from  junior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) and senior Lucy Gould (Bargoed, Wales), who both finished tied for ninth after carding scores of 2-over 74. The trio helped make it a sweep for the Buccaneers, who finished atop the team leaderboard with a score of 299, one stroke better than College of Charleston and Arkansas-Little Rock.

"This was a much better effort than we've had in our last two tournaments," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "Mayte was really good today and we got the type of score throughout our lineup to finish at the top. I was very proud of our team today."

Vizcarrondo leads the individual competition by one stroke over Maryland's Alexis Holmes, while a trio of players are tied for third at even par.

Along with Vizcarrondo, O'Sullivan and Gould, ETSU's Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport) and Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) finished tied for 60th and 69th, respectively.

Play in the Palmetto Intercollegiate will continue with the conclusion of second round play and third round action on Tuesday. This will be the final autumn event for the ETSU women's team.
