WOLCOTT, Colo. (Sept. 26, 2012) – After posting two quality efforts during the first two days of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the ETSU women’s golf team wrapped up the event Wednesday with another strong performance at the Red Sky Golf Club’s Fazio Course.
Finishing eight strokes ahead of No. 2-ranked UCLA, the Buccaneers ended the event in eighth place out of 18 teams – and ahead of several squads ranked in the Top 50 nationally. Individually, sophomore Gabrielle Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) led the Bucs with another 2-over-par 74 effort and tied for 15th.
"This is one of the most prestigious fields we will see all year, and we beat some great teams like No. 2 UCLA, San Jose State, Florida State and Nebraska,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “UCLA won a national title two years ago, so I think this says something about our team’s potential.”
Pepperdine, the nation’s No. 23-ranked team, bested UC Davis by five strokes to win the team title, while individually Demi Runas of UC Davis held on for a three-stroke victory over UT-San Antonio’s Fabiola Arriaga. Pepperdine finished at 4-under 860 for the tournament, while Runas ended the event at 7-under 209 (71-67-71).
As for the rest of the Bucs, junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) finished tied for 28th, junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) tied for 39th, and senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) tied for 52nd.
The Bucs will return to action Oct. 1 at the UNCG Starmount Classic in Greensboro, N.C. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012-13 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
