Buccaneer senior sits tied for fifth; ETSU within striking distance

MACON, Ga. (Nov. 9, 2020) – Senior Tereza Melecka (Belcovice, Czech Republic) led the ETSU women’s golf team on the opening day of the Mercer Invitational, which begin Monday from the Brickyard Golf Club in Macon, Ga.

Melecka sits tied for fifth at posting a 36-hole score of 2-over-par 146 (74-72), while the Buccaneers – who won their first fall tournament two weeks ago in Sparrtanburg, S.C. – are within striking distance as they head into Tuesday’s final round. The Blue and Gold are six shots off the pace at 25-over-par 601 (305-296), while Western Kentucky and Chattanooga are tied for the lead at 19-over-par 595. Tournament host Mercer is in third-place at 21-over-par 597.

Melecka carded 24 pars and five birdies in the first two rounds with four of them coming over a nine-hole stretch in round two. However, after sitting 3-under through her first 11 holes, Melecka played the final seven holes at 3-over to finish with the 72 in the nightcap.

Melecka, who is eyeing her fourth career win, is four shots off the lead as Chattanooga’s Daphen Van Son is the 36-hole leader at 2-under-par 142 (70-72). Western Kentucky’s Sarah Arnold is one shot back in second, while Georgia Southern’s and Mercer’s Laureen Lightfritz are tied for third at 1-over-par 145.

Joining Melecka in the top-10 is fellow senior Kornbongkoat Sararat (Nongkhai, Thailand) as she’s tied for eighth at 6-over-par 150. After bumpy start to her second round with three straight bogeys, Sararat finished strong and looks to carry the positive momentum in Tuesday’s finale. Sararat played her final two holes at 3-under-par as she eagled the par-4, 383-yard No. 4 and birdied the par-3, 175-yard No. 5. Sararat and Georgia Southern’s Kaysie Harrelson were the only golfers in the 53-woman field to register an eagle on Monday.

Senior Warda Amira Rawof (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), coming off her first collegiate win two weeks ago at the Terrier Intercollegiate, is tied for 13th at 7-over-par 151 (76-75), while graduate transfer Blanca Porta is tied for 23rd at 10-over-par 154 (79-75).

The Bucs begin final round play Tuesday morning at 8:30. Live scoring for the tournament is featured on Updates will also be posted on Twitter at @ETSUWomensGolf, while recaps will be posted on at the conclusion of each day.
