Johnson City, Tenn. - The women's soccer team could not hang on to an early 1-0 lead as UNC Greensboro raced to a 5-1 Southern Conference victory at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex on Oct. 20.
ETSU's Rebekah Eisenberg began the scoring as she netted a pass from Melissa Wilder to put the Bucs on top 1-0 with 8:57 elapsed. UNC Greensboro responded quickly as Megan Bynum blasted a shot from teammate Meredith Seawell past Buccaneer goalkeeper Lauren Fannon at the 9:17 mark.
The Spartans took the lead for good at the 18:34 mark as Kara Mirarchi scored the first of her two goals off an assist from Kate Dylag. She netted her second goal at the 23:31 mark with a pass from Bynum to put the Spartans up 3-1.
The Bucs had golden opportunities bounce off the post and crossbar late in the first half as Kristin Redfern unleashed a shot that hit the far post and bounced away from the Spartan goalkeeper. Andrea Brown secured the rebound and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced out of play to end the Buccaneer threat.
Cheryl Stewart capped off the scoring as she tallied 2 goals on the afternoon Stewart's first goal came from assists from Ashley Horton and Jennifer Kennedy at 56:58. The final goal of the afternoon came at 74:32 off an assist from Jill Barrett
Fannon recorded five saves on the afternoon for the Bucs while UNC Greensboro's Kathryn Clewley tallied two saves.
With the loss, ETSU falls to 6-10 on the year, 0-8 in Southern Conference play. UNC Greensboro improves to 8-7-1 overall, 5-2 in Southern Conference action.
The Bucs will celebrate Senior Day when they return to action Sunday, October 20, when they face Davidson in the final home match of the season. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
