JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 30, 2013) – In dominating fashion, the ETSU women’s soccer team cruised to a 5-1 win over VMI in its home opener Friday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Five different Buccaneers found the scoring column in the victory.

In her first collegiate game, freshman Thomai Vardali (Koufalia, Greece) scored in the ninth minute to give the Bucs an early 1-0 lead. Set up by a well-placed pass from sophomore Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria), Vardali connected on an acrobatic shot to beat VMI goalkeeper Liz Nickerson.

Zadrazil and junior Emilee Engelhaupt (Charlotte, N.C.) followed suit later in the half, as ETSU (1-2-0) carried a commanding 3-0 lead into intermission.

Freshman Jenny Poeltl (Steinberg-Dorfl, Austria) junior Jasmin Dutton (Kinmel Bay, Wales) added further insurance goals in the second period to secure ETSU's first win of the season.

The Bucs outshot VMI (0-2-0) by a wide margin, 21-7.

ETSU's platoon of freshmen goalkeepers was 30 seconds from recording the shutout when VMI's Sydnie Bligh gave the Keydets their lone goal in the 89th minute. Jasmine Elliott (Preston, England) tended the net for ETSU in the first half, picking up the win, while Anna Yancey (Rosemark, Tenn.) helped secure the victory in the second half.

The Bucs look to continue their winning ways when they travel to North Carolina State (3-0-0) Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m.
