Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 18, 2002) � The No. 10-seeded East Tennessee State women's tennis team fell to No. 7-seeded Appalachian State, 5-2, in the first round of the Southern Conference Championships from the City of Charleston Farmfield Courts in Charleston, S.C. The Mountaineers (8-12) won the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches. The ETSU (1-21, 0-9 SoCon) team of freshman Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and sophomore Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) defeated ASU's Tammy Beaulieu and Jennifer Fayad, 8-4, at the No. 1 seed. Appalachian State's Donna Altenberger and Kasia Finkowski earned an 8-2 victory over ETSU sophomores Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Colombia) and Aimee Villaviencio (Louisville, Ky.) in the two spot. At No. 3, the Mountaineer team of Melissa Burgette and Elena Berger won by default. In singles play, the Bucs started out well as ETSU's Halim won over Appalachian State's Beaulieu, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. ETSU won their second singles point as Buccaneer Irey defeated ASU's Berger, 6-1, 6-3 in the two slot. Appalachian State then caught fire as they won the remaining four singles matches to win the contest. ETSU's Arriaran fell to Appalachian State's Finkowski at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Mountaineer Fayad won at No. 4, 3-6, 6-2 (DNF) after Villavicencio suffered an injury. Appalachian State's Altenberger defeated Buccaneer sophomore Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.), 6-4, 6-4 in the five slot. ASU's Burgette won by default at No. 6 singles.
