Johnson City, Tenn. (March 23, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team (1-12, 0-3 SoCon) lost 5-2 to Southern Conference opponent, Appalachian State (4-7, 1-2 SoCon), on a cool Sunday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Center. Sophomore Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) and freshman Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) scored the wins for the Bucs in conference play today. Appalachian State took the doubles point with three straight wins. The ETSU team of Irey and Halim fell to Tammy Beaulieu and Jennifer Fayad in a very competitive bout, 9-8(5). In the No. 2 spot, Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) was defeated by Kasis Finkowska and Elena Berger. The final match went ASU's way with Donna Altenburger and Melissa Burgette defeating Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Charmaine Luvis (Gastonia, N.C.), 8-0. In singles action, Irey wins her second match in two days when she defeated Berger at the No. 2 spot by the scores of 6-4, 7-6(7-5). In the No. 3 position, Halim downed Finkowska in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 1, Arriaran lost to Beaulieu, 6-2, 6-2. Fayad won her No. 4 match against Villavicencio, 7-5, 6-2. Jones lost to Altenburger at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-1. Burgette defeated Luvis to win the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-2. The Bucs finish the weekend by hosting the University of Dayton Flyers on Sunday, March 24th at 1:00 p.m. outdoors at the ETSU Tennis Center.
