Tennis Teams in Action at Home This Weekend

Johnson City, Tenn. (March 21, 2002) -East Tennessee State's men's and women's tennis teams will be in action at home outdoors this weekend at the ETSU Tennis Center. The weekend begins with a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the men's team. On Saturday the women will start play at noon against Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State and the men take on Charleston Southern at 3:00 p.m. that day. The women will finish the weekend by taking on the University of Dayton at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The 53rd-ranked ETSU men's tennis team (5-4, 2-0 SoCon) starts the weekend with Tennessee Tech. In their last match, the Bucs defeated #59 Georgia State, 4-3. Leading the way for the Bucs are junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and sophomore Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina). Pavlovich is 8-4 in singles competition at the No. 1 position this season. Iglesias is 6-2 overall in singles competition this season with a 3-1 record at the No. 4 position. "We are beginning to play better as a team," said men's had coach Dave Mullins, "Everyone's game is coming to together. This is an important weekend for us." The Lady Bucs (1-10, 0-2 SoCon) have a full weekend ahead of them, facing Tennessee Tech, Appalachian State and the University of Dayton. The women's last match was against #74 Virginia Tech, who defeated the Lady Bucs 6-1. Freshman Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) scored the lone point for ETSU by defeating Virginia Tech's Meredith Vincent, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. "I think this weekend will be good," said women's head coach Steve Brooks, "We're going to learn more about how we are playing."
