Blacksburg, Va. (March 17, 2002) -The 74th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies defeated East Tennessee State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Virginia Tech swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches to claim the victory. Ines Khelifi, ranked No. 83 in the latest Omni Hotel/Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) in the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 while Ginger Lowdermilk cruised past Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) at the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-4.
Carolyn Kramer won at No. 4 over Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) 6-3, 6-2 and Zdenka Videnova defeated Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) in the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-0. Bridget Bruner won her No. 6 match by default. ETSU's lone win of the day occurred at No. 2 where Meredith Vincent dropped a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision to Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia).
The Hokies opened the day with three doubles wins as Khelifi and Lowdermilk blanked Irey and Halim in the No. 1 match 8-0 while Kramer and Videnova disposed of Arriaran and Villavicencio 8-4 at No. 2. Vincent and Ashleigh Sarver won by default at No. 3.
The Bucs travel to Cullowhee, N. C. to take on Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18th.
