Johnson City, Tenn. (March 9, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team (1-5) lost to the Ball State Cardinals (7-2), 7-0, in a match that started outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts and had to be moved inside the Memorial Center due to rain. Singles matches had to be moved indoors.
The doubles competition was held outdoors before the rain came. Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) lost the No. 1 match, 8-3, to Ball State's Melissa Roach and Abigail Hodge. In No. 2 doubles, Leisa Brooks and Jenny Batty defeated ETSU's Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.), 8-4.
In singles competition, Halim lost to Roach in two sets, 6-0 and 6-3. In the No. 2 spot, Ball State's Brooks had a tough time with Irey but Brooks wins 7-5, 6-3. It took three sets for Hodge to defeat Arriaran 6-3, 4-6, and 6-1. ETSU's Villavicencio and Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) were shutout in both sets of their matches.
