ETSU women's tennis falls to No. 37 Pennsylvania, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (February 10, 2007) - The ETSU women's tennis team fell to the No. 37 Pennsylvania Quakers today, 6-1 at the Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia. ETSU falls to 2-6 on the year while Pennsylvania improves to 4-0.

 

The Quakers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they took the doubles point. Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) fell to the duo of Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya in the No. 2 position, 8-3 , while Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) fell to Maria Anismova and Ekaterina Kosminskaya, 9-7 in the No. 1 position. The Quakers completed the sweep as Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) and Brittany Stewart (Brentwood, Tenn.) fell to Amanda Avedissian and Lenka Snajdrova, 8-4 in the No. 3 position.

 

In singles action, Olya Batsula fell to Ekaterina Kosminskaya, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 position, while Masha Ilina fell to Yulia Rivelis, 6-4, 6-4 in the second position. Playing No. 3 for ETSU, Yevgeniya Stupak stretched her opponent to three sets, which was decided by a 10-point tiebraker. She fell to Julia Koulbitskaya, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

 

Competing in No. 4 singles, Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) fell to Maria Anismova, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Tara Byrne picked up her first win of the spring season and the only point for the Lady Bucs, in the No. 5 slot, as she defeated Michelle Mitchell, 6-3, 6-7 (7-2), 10-5. In the No. 6 position Vita Moskaliova fell to Lauren Sadaka, 6-2, 6-3.

 

"Overall we played a good match, we played them very tough. It was good that Tara got her first win this year," said head coach Steve Brooks. "I think we're playing good, we're just a little tired right now and are looking forward to playing our next match at Charleston."
