Women's tennis wraps up play at ETSU Fall Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 16, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team concluded play Saturday at the ETSU Fall Invitational picking up several wins in both singles and doubles action.

 

In day two of competition at the ETSU Fall Invitational, newcomer Brittany Stewart (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) fell to Milano and Price of Radford, 8-4 before defeating Noldin and Spector also of Radford, 8-3 to take home third place in the A-2 doubles bracket.

 

Competing in the flight one singles bracket, Knight defeated Trish Hanson of Western Carolina before defeating Monica Tomas of Appalachian State, 6-4, 6-2, while Stewart fell to Lauren Wolken of Georgia Southern, 6-0, 6-1 before defeating Janie Mullins of Milligan College, 6-3, 6-5 to finish third in the flight four singles bracket.

 

Newcomer Sharvis Smith (Norton, Va.) defeated Leona Baumgardner of Cumberlands, 6-3, 6-3 before defeating Kate Ostendorf in a hard-fought match, 6-1, 4-6 (6). Smith finish fifth in the flight 10 singles bracket.

 

"The ETSU tournament was another success this year," said head coach Steve Brooks. "A lot of people got a whole lot of matches, anytime a tournament can provide around 280 matches, that's a good tournament. There was good competition today and we had great weather and it was just good. We are looking forward to next year's tournament."
