Lady Bucs tennis cruises past Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 21, 2008) - The ETSU women's tennis team breezed by Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, 6-1 to win their seventh consecutive match. The Lady Bucs improve to 10-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while the Eagles fall to 4-11, 0-5.

 

The Lady Bucs jumped out to an early lead as they claimed the doubles point. In the No. 1 position the Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) cruised past Maria Braniecka and Jordan Vaughn, 8-4 while Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) dropped Brett Kinley and Leah Johnson in the third position, 9-7. Competing in the second position Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) fell to Maria Maggiorini and Lauren Pfeiffer, 9-7.

 

In singles action, No. 92 Yevgeniya Stupak breezed by Maria Maggiorini, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot, while Olya Batsula defeated Maria Braniecka, 7-6, 4-0, ret. in the second position. In the third slot Tara Byrne raced by Lauren Pfeiffer, 6-1, 6-0 while Elena Volobueva defeated Jordan Vaughn, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 slot. Freshman Andra Voinea picked up another win for the Bucs as she defeated Leah Johnson 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth position.

 

"It was good to get another win in the conference. The girls played well. It was a good tune up match for tomorrow. It's going to be a tough match against Louisiana-Lafayette," said head coach Steve Brooks. "Olya and Elena both moved up on the career singles win list today. Olya is now in sole possession of third while Elena is in sixth."

 

The Eagles earned their lone point when Brett Kinley defeated Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) 7-5, 6-3.
