NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 15, 2008) - The ETSU women's tennis team fell to No. 12 Vanderbilt, 6-1 Saturday, at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville. ETSU falls to 1-4 on the year while the Vanderbilt improves to 6-0.
In doubles the Commodores claimed the point as the duo of Caroline Ferrell and Keilly Ulery defeated Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus), 8-2 in the third position, while Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) fell to Taka Bertrand and Catherine Newman, 8-4 in the second position. They completed the sweep as Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery dropped Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus), 8-5 in the No. 1 slot.
Vanderbilt then took a 2-0 advantage as Caroline Ferrell defeated Vita Moskaliova, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 position, while Tara Byrne fell to No. 24 Catherine Newman, 6-1, 6-0 in the second position. The Commodores would then clinch the match as Taka Bertrand dropped Tara Sheets, 6-0, 6-1.
The Commodores then increased their lead to 6-0 as they picked up wins in the No. 5 and No. 3 positions respectively. In the fifth spot Whitney Trotter fell to Keilly Ulery, 6-0, 6-0 while Olya Batsula fell to No. 13 Courtney Ulery, 6-2, 7-5.
The Lady Bucs picked up their lone point as No. 90 Yevgeniya Stupak defeated No. 34 Amanda Taylor, 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 in the top position.
"We played outside today because the weather was 50 degrees so that was a little different. The highlight without a doubt was Stupak winning in the top position. Taylor is without a doubt the highest ranked player that an ETSU tennis player has ever defeated," said head coach Steve Brooks. "We have played some tough opponents this year with Georgia, Kentucky and now Vanderbilt and when conference play starts in a couple of weeks we should be ready for it having these tough matches behind us."
The Lady Bucs will be back in action on February 22 as they take on UNC Charlotte in Bristol before returning to Johnson City to host Tennessee Tech. The match against Charlotte is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. while the match against Tennessee Tech will begin at 3:00 p.m. Follow all ETSU women's tennis action at www.ETSUBucs.com.
