Friday, October 26, 2007

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 26, 2007) - The ETSU women's tennis team began play on Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of South Carolina. Due to heavy rain showers in the area only one round of doubles was contested.

In the A-1 doubles draw Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) teamed up to drop College of Charleston's No. 1 team of Link Leskosky and Laura Borza, 8-2.

"Yevgeniya and Elena played very well today. It was the first time they've played together since last season and they played extremely well," said head coach Steve Brooks.

Competing in the C-1 flight Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) cruised past Hannah Priest and Luiza Borges of Eastern Carolina, 8-2.

"Whitney and Andra started out a little shaky because they hadn't played all day but once they warmed up they played very well," said Brooks. "This is a very good tournament with a lot of good players and we're looking forward to a lot of good matches this weekend."
