BLACKSBURG, Va. (Oct. 7, 2007) - The Lady Bucs tennis team continued its successful run at the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational on Sunday as sophomore Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) took the Flight A singles title. 

Stupak continued her stellar play as she breezed by Virginia Tech's J.J. Larson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal match before defeating Ohio State's Christina Keesey, 6-4, 6-3 to take the title.

Wrapping up consolation play in Flight A, Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) cruised past Kristin Nimitz of James Madison, 6-0, 6-2.

Competing in the Flight B consolation bracket Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) fell to Paige Kensrue of Elon, 7-5, 2-1 before retiring.

In Flight C action, Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) defeated J.J. Larson of Virginia Tech, 7-6(7), 6-3 and earned a third place finish in the flight.

In Flight D, Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) rallied from a set down to defeat Radford's Ashton Downs, 1-6, 6-2, 10-3 for a fifth place finish.

Competing in Flight E consolation Brittany Stewart (Brentwood, Tenn.) fell to Jessica Margolis of Elon, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, Stupak and Batsula fell in a hard-fought, 9-8(5) battle for the Flight A title to Inga Beermann and Jessica Brouwer of Virginia Tech to finish in second place, while Trotter and Volobueva defeated Aditi Krishnan and Joanna Woo of Eastern Michigan, 8-2 for a third place finish in Flight B.

"It was a good day for ETSU tennis. The highlight was that Yevgeniya won her flight. It was a great tournament with a few currently ranked players and several that had been ranked. Everyone played really well and I'm pleased with the results," said head coach Steve Brooks.
