BLACKSBURG, Va. (Oct. 6, 2007) - The ETSU women's tennis team completed day two of the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Senior Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and sophomore Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) teamed up to reach the finals of Flight A draw. The Lady Bucs will wrap up action on Sunday morning.
Stupak and Batsula defeated Holly Johnson and J.J. Larson of host-school Virginia Tech, 8-4 in the quarterfinals before dropping Angela Dipastina and Christina Keesey of Ohio State, 8-6 in semifinal action. They will face Inga Beermann and Jessica Brouwer of Virginia Tech in the championship match.
Competing in the Flight B doubles draw, Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) defeated James Madison's Kelly Maxwell and Kristin Nimitz, 8-3 in the quarterfinals before falling to Virginia Tech's Jessica Long and Abbey Walker, 8-6. They will square off against Aditi Krishnan and Joanna Woo of Eastern Michigan for a third place finish.
Also competing in Flight B, Brittany Stewart (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) fell to Camilia Noldin and Ivana Tomaic of Radford, 8-0 in consolation before falling to Ida Donner and Barrett Donner of James Madison, 8-5.
In singles action Stupak's Flight A semifinal match against Virginia Tech's Jessica Long has been postponed until Sunday due to a NCAA regulation that states that a player can only play in three matches a day. Also competing in Flight A, Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) advanced over Sandra Wilkstrom of Eastern Michigan by default. She will face James Madison's Kristin Nimitz in consolation on Sunday.
In Flight B consolation, Voinea fell to Paige Kensrue of Elon, 7-6(4), 6-1, while Batsula rolled by Rebecca Erickson of James Madison, 6-3, 6-0. Batsula will face Paige Kensrue of Elon while Voinea will take on Rebecca Erickson of James Madison.
Volobueva fell to Ohio State's Julie Blackmore in the semifinals of the Flight C draw in a hard-fought, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-2 decision. She will square off against Virginia Tech's J.J. Larson to compete for a third place finish.
Competing in Flight D, Trotter fell to Elon's Laura Graybill. She will square off against Ashton Downs of Radford for a fifth place finish.
Also competing in Flight D, Brittany Stewart (Brentwood, Tenn.) fell to Whitney Butcher of Elon, 7-6(6), 6-1.
"Overall it was a pretty good day. Yevgeniya and Olya played extremely well in their doubles matches and it's really good for them to reach the finals. Everyone played pretty well in singles and Elena just barely lost her match. Her opponent from Ohio State has been playing in their number one position for the last couple of years. Hopefully tomorrow Yevgeniya will win her match and make it to the finals," said head coach Steve Brooks.
