KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2007) - The Lady Bucs tennis team concluded the first two rounds of singles action at the St. Mary's Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee on Saturday. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final round of singles beginning at 9 a.m.
Competing in flight one sophomore Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) fell to No. 39 Sanaz Marand of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinal round and then advanced over No. 51 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia, 5-2, ret. She will face Purdue's Brooke Beier to compete for a fifth place finish.
In the second flight singles junior Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) fell to Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-4 before falling to Cigdem Duru of Purdue, 6-3, 6-2. She will square off against Stephanie Parkinson of MTSU at 11 a.m.
In flight three, senior Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) fell to No. 125 Kelly Hyndman of Georgia, 6-4, 6-1 before dropping to Tennessee's Jennifer Meredith, 6-2, 6-3. Batsula will take on Elvira Yusapova of MTSU.
Competing in the fourth flight newcomer Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) dropped to Sierra Poske of Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-2 before falling to Jelena Duricik of North Carolina, 6-5, 6-0. She will take on MTSU's Marlene Chemin at 10 a.m.
Senior Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) fell to Stephanie Wooten of Purdue, 6-2, 6-0 in the fifth flight quarterfinals before falling to North Carolina's Meg Fanjoy, 6-2, 6-3. Volobueva will face Claudia Szabo of MTSU.
In the sixth flight Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) dropped to North Carolina's Sophia Grabinski, 6-1, 6-4 before dropping to Jo-Ann Van Aerde of Louisville, 6-2, 6-1. She will take on Ann-Kristen Siljestrom of MTSU in the final round of consolation.
Newcomer Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) fell to Alexandra Jurewitz of North Carolina in a hard fought match, 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Rosalie Alda of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-4 in the seventh flight. She will square off against Shannon Hartman of MTSU at 9 a.m.
Competing in the eighth flight Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) fell to MTSU's Pooja Kommireddi in a close match, 7-6 (5), 6-1 before falling to Notre Dame's Denise Ellison, 6-5, 6-0. She will face Alejandra Boeker of Purdue.
In the ninth and final flight, Brittany Stewart (Nashville, Tenn.) defeated Purdue's Whitney Reys in a hard fought, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 match. She will face Andrea Herrara of MTSU in the final round.
"We faced a lot of tough competition today, three of the teams in this tournament were all ranked in the top six in the nation at one time last year. Both Georgia and Notre Dame were ranked No. 1 at one point. Hopefully tomorrow we'll be able to finish out a little bit stronger," said coach Steve Brooks.
