Stupak and the ETSU doubles team of Trotter and Moskaliova advances to the finals at the Hokie Invitational

Blacksburg, Va. (November 1, 2008) - Battling darkness and a delay in play the ETSU women's tennis team continued its great run at the Hokie Invitational this weekend. Leading the way in Blacksburg, Va., is junior Yevgenyia Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and the Bucs doubles team of Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus).

 

The No.63rd ranked Stupak defeated Petra Dajevic (Radford) 6-1, 6-0, then followed that up by dropping Jessica Brouwer (Virginia Tech) in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1 in the Flight Bracket A semifinals. 

 

The ETSU team of Trotter and Moskaliova won its respected doubles bracket by defeating MSU's team of Pierson and Webb, 9-8 (3) in the semifinals, before handing Chattanooga's duo of Van Der Veek and Wishing, 8-3 for the title.

 

Also in action for the Bucs is senior Tara Byrne (Johnson City) who lost her quarterfinals match against Virginia's Lindsey Hardenbergh 6-2, 6-0. However, the ETSU senior bounced back by defeating Michele Fanney in the consolation bracket.

 

In Flight B singles action sophomore Andra Voiena (Brasov, Romania) dropped her quarterfinals match to Virginia Tech's Yasmin Hamza, 6-2, 6-0, before rebounding in the consolation bracket, defeating ASU's Bean Blakely Bean, 6-4, 6-2. Also in action for the Bucs was freshman Paula Jamie (Madrid, Spain) who rolled to the consolation bracket finals defeating MSU's Adrianna Alvarez 6-2, 6-3 and Eastern Carolina's Brooke Walter, 7-5, 6-3.

 

In Flight C singles action ETSU's Moskaliova won both her consolation bracket matches advancing to the finals by dropping ASU's Olivia Stannard 6-0, 6-4 and MSU's Alexis Webb, 6-2, 6-4. Also in singles action was freshman Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), who won her quarterfinals match by defeating Kristina Koprcina, 7-5, 6-1, however the ETSU newcomer could maintain her momentum dropping to Virginia Tech's Martha Blakely, 6-3, 6-2.

 

Rounding out the Bucs singles scores was Trotter who dropped to Shannon Betts of Virgina Tech, 6-2, 6-2. Trotter would rebound however and defeat Eastern Carolina's Rocia Cabinallas, while freshman Jessica Ratcliff (Bristol) lost to Christina Hammond of Radford 6-3, 6-0.
