Bucs gain two doubles victories against Kentucky as Jaime wins again
MT PLEASANT, S.C. (Oct. 29, 2011) – The ETSU women’s tennis team played in day two of the Frightful Halloween Tennis Challenge on Saturday hosted by the College of Charleston, as the Bucs defeated Kentucky in two doubles flights and senior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) came away with a 6-0, 6-4 singles victory over Winthrop’s Garcia.
“We got off to a great start in doubles,” said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “To win two out of three against an SEC team is great for our confidence and it shows that everyone can step up and win when needed.
“In singles, we just need to be a little more consistent against these types of teams. We go up against quality competition and need to show up to play each day.”
The Buccaneers began the day in doubles action against the Wildcats, with Jaime and senior Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeating Morin and Blajkevitch 8-5 to get ETSU rolling. Soon after, senior Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) and newcomer Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) reeled in the Bucs’ second victory of the day with a 9-8(2) takedown of Venter and McGraw.
ETSU could not find its touch in the afternoon, dropping four of six singles matches to Winthrop. Wieliczko came away with the other Buccaneer singles victory, defeating Amrani 6-0, 6-3.
The final day of the Halloween Challenge rises upon ETSU on Sunday, with the Bucs set to clash with Charleston in singles and Winthrop in doubles. The doubles portion of the day begins at 10 a.m. while the singles begins at 1:15 p.m.
