Women’s tennis closes out play at Charleston invite
MT PLEASANT, S.C. (Oct. 30, 2011) – Senior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) completed the weekend sweep at Charleston’s Frightful Halloween Tennis Challenge, defeating the Cougars’ Christine Newman 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the Flight One championship as the ETSU women’s tennis team wrapped up play on Sunday afternoon from the College of Charleston Tennis Center.
“I was extremely pleased with the way the team finished the tournament,” said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “After day one, I reinforced closing out matches when leading and continuing to fight if we were down a set, and the team responded quite well.”
Jaime did just that. The senior dropped her opening set to Newman, 6-1, but answered back in a strong way by surrendering only five games through the rest of the match en route to her three set victory.
Winning her Friday and Saturday matches as well, Jaime completed the weekend with a 3-0 record to claim the Flight One title.
“Paula [Jaime] is on fire right now and is really playing some great tennis,” added Sandlant on Jaime’s performance through the fall season. “She has now won three of four tournaments she has played in at the top spot which is really pleasing to see.”
The Buccaneers celebrated more than just Jaime’s victory on Sunday, as senior Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) defeated Caroline Newman 6-3, 6-3 and freshman Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) won her second match of the weekend with a 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 triumph over Olivia McMillan.
In doubles, ETSU faced Winthrop and came away with two victories in three matches as Jaime and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Portiolli and Herrera 8-4, and Giulia Andreazza (Balneario, Camboriu) and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) took down Amrani and Charleston’s Caroline Newman 8-6.
“It just goes to show that if this team continues to work hard, we will have a successful spring season.”
