Bucs in hunt for four singles and one doubles championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Nov. 4, 2011) – The ETSU women’s tennis team held a 4-1 record in singles play and a 4-2 record in doubles, remaining in contention for five titles on Friday at the Hokie Fall Invite inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

“Although we had a successful day on the score board, tomorrow we need to come out and play more relaxed,” said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “We put unnecessary pressure on ourselves today, and we need to be more efficient in order to play at the level we expect.”

Despite not playing their best tennis, senior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain), senior Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), sophomore Giulia Andreazza (Balneario, Camboriu) and freshman Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) all walked away with victories in their respective draws. Senior Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) was originally scheduled to compete in Flight A with Jaime, but did not make the trip due to illness.

The Bucs success started with a morning sweep in doubles play, as Jaime and Kedzo won in Flight A and Andreazza and Diana Navrotska (Lviv, Ukraine) won in Flight B. Brumit paired with Elon’s Smialek for her doubles match after originally being teamed with Wieliczko. Regardless, Brumit came away with another ETSU win to send two Buccaneer pairs into the quarterfinals.

The Buccaneer duos struggled through the quarterfinals, as Jaime and Andreazza won the only other doubles match for ETSU on the day.

Play picks up Saturday with a doubles round at 9 a.m., followed by two rounds of singles action.
