Jaime ends fall with 15-3 singles record and three championships
BLACKSBURG, Va. (Nov. 6, 2011) – The ETSU women’s tennis team wrapped up the fall season on Sunday at the Hokie Fall Classic, but were unable to build on its fall title count as the Bucs fell in both the Flight A and Flight D final inside Virginia Tech’s Burrow-Burleson Athletics Center.
Senior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and freshman Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton Tenn.) each dropped straight set matches to Tulane, Jaime in Flight A and Brumit in Flight D, as ETSU walked away without a championship for just the second time this fall. Jaime fell to Mariam Kurdadze 7-5, 7-5, and Emma Helisten defeated Brumit 6-1, 6-4.
“We had a great tournament this past weekend,” said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “Unfortunately, we did not get it done in the two main draw finals, but I have seen a lot of positive signs throughout the fall and in this tournament.”
ETSU enjoyed success elsewhere in singles play, as Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine), Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) all ended the fall season on the winning end. Navrostska defeated Othilia Lindqvist of Wofford 6-0, 6-2, Kedzo took out William & Mary’s Sydney Smith 5-6. 7-5, 1-0 (6) and Andreazza defeated Liberty’s Nicole Wellman 6-1, 6-3.
Regardless of Sunday’s results, ETSU has enjoyed a successful 2011 fall season behind the play of Jaime. The senior has played through five tournaments, boasting a 15-3 singles record and winning three championships. The highlight of Jaime’s fall season came at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional, where she went 5-0 through the back draw on her way to capturing ETSU’s first regional title in program history. At the conclusion of play, the ETSU senior was also voted to receive the regional tournament’s Sportsmanship Award.
“Paula [Jaime] has had a fantastic fall season,” added Sandlant. “She started the season playing well and has only continued to improve with each tournament. If she continues to play like this in the spring, it would be a big help to our entire team.
“We are going to wind down for the rest of the year, focus on our strength and conditioning and come back healthy and ready for a, hopefully, successful spring.”
