Senior ranked No. 115 nationally, No. 11 in Ohio Valley region
SKILLMAN, N.J. (Jan. 10, 2012) – ETSU women’s tennis senior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) earned her first-ever ITA ranking, slotted at No. 115 in Division I singles in the association’s preliminary 2012 rankings as released on Jan. 3.
“It’s great that Paula is finally being recognized as a ranked player,” said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “She works hard on and off the court and for her to be rewarded nationally is an honor that I think is well overdue. She had a great fall and as a result has seen the rewards. Hopefully she continues to play well into the spring season and possibly becomes one of the highest ranked student-athletes this program has ever had.”
Jaime is also ranked No. 11 in the Ohio Valley region in singles, and is ranked with senior Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) as the region’s No. 10 doubles team.
Jaime compiled a 15-3 singles record through the fall season, winning three championships including the consolation title at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional. After drawing the No. 1 seed in the first round of the regional tournament, Jaime reeled off five-consecutive wins through the back draw to claim the title while also being honored with the regional tournament’s Sportsmanship Award. Her other two fall titles came at the College of Charleston’s Frightful Halloween Challenge, winning the Flight One championship, and on opening weekend at the ETSU Invitational.
The ETSU women’s tennis team begins its quest to repeat as Atlantic Sun champions when it opens up the spring season on Friday, Jan. 20 against No. 14 Clemson in Clemson, S.C. at 10:30 a.m.
