Wins by Brumit, Wieliczko not enough to overcome the Demon Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (March 12, 2012) – The ETSU women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to Wake Forest on Sunday evening at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

ETSU (3-6) got singles wins from senior Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) and freshman Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.), but was swept in doubles and took no other sets in singles play as Wake Forest (2-8) snapped a five-match losing streak which included a 4-3 loss to No. 29 Brown earlier in the afternoon.

Wake Forest started the day with a doubles sweep to take the match's first point. Ryann Cutillo and Rebecca Siegler gave the Demon Deacons the doubles advantage early on with an 8-1 defeat of ETSU’s previously undefeated No. 2 doubles team of senior Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and freshman Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia). Karen Forman and Brigita Bercyte then clinched the doubles point by defeating the Bucs’ No. 3 team of sophomore Giulia Andreazza (Camboriu Balneario, Brazil) and Brumit, 8-2. Seniors Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Wieliczko came into the day with a 3-0 doubles record this spring, but were also handed a defeat at No. 1 doubles by Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert, 8-5.

Wieliczko quickly picked ETSU back up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Talbert. The victory snapped the senior’s brief two-match losing streak and improved her spring record to 3-5 as she is now 2-2 in her last four matches.

The boost was not enough to save ETSU with Wake Forest taking the next three points to clinch the match.

Duncan – the No. 66 ITA-ranked singles player – continued her impressive season with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Jaime. Kedzo won just as many games in her match, falling at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-0 to Siegler. Cutillo then clinched the Demon Deacons’ second win of the year with a similar result against Andreazaa, 6-2, 6-1.

Brumit provided the Bucs some relief by getting back on track with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Bercyte in the No. 6 match. The freshman saw her four-match winning streak snapped on Friday against Marshall, but has still won five of her last six matches and improved to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in dual match play.

The day ended with Forman getting the better of Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) 6-4, 6-3.

ETSU will begin the conference season next weekend when it travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for a Friday match with Jacksonville and a Saturday meeting with North Florida.
