ETSU improves to .500 at 7-7

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 30, 2012) – The ETSU women’s tennis team made it three Atlantic Sun Conference wins in a row on Friday with a clean 7-0 sweep of Lipscomb at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.

ETSU (7-7, 4-1 A-Sun) took every singles and doubles set on its way to earning its second road win of the year. The Bucs are now back to .500 for the first time since dropping to 1-2 following a loss to then-No. 61 Virginia Tech back on Feb. 11.

Lipscomb (4-9, 1-3 A-Sun) dropped its second match in a row which includes a 6-1 loss against Kennesaw State last weekend. The Bison were also let down by their hottest racket in Samantha Bowman, who fell in straight sets to freshman Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) 6-1, 6-1.

“I was very pleased with the team’s performance today,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “It was great to see Kelsey [Williams] have a successful day and hitting the way I know she can.”

Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia) played in her first match since March 6, and snapped a six-match losing streak in impressive fashion with a 6-0, 6-0 blowout of Danielle Hansen in the No. 5 singles match. The freshman also paired with sophomore Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) at No. 3 doubles and played a flawless set against Alyssa Bellini and Bowman, 8-0.

Also in doubles, senior duo Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) defeated Deahna Welcher and Jenny Borck, 8-3, in the No. 1 match, while ETSU's other senior duo of Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) defeated Lipscomb's Elizabeth Keevil and Hensen, 8-5.

The rest of singles action was highlighted by Jaime's 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Bellini, pulling the senior to within one win of Olya Batsula for fifth place in all-time singles victories at ETSU. Jaime now has 85 career singles victories, 20 of which have come this year.

Andreazza, Wieliczko and Navrostska all also earned straight-set victories, and are all now on a three-match winning streak. All three also hold a 4-1 record in A-Sun play this spring.

The ETSU women's tennis team will look for the Nashville sweep on Saturday, when it travels across town to take on Belmont at 10 a.m.
