MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Oct. 20, 2013) – After a first-round exit of the tournament’s main draw, Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) demonstrated why the tandem was ranked No. 51 in the ITA’s preseason rankings, advancing to the finals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships back draw Sunday.
The nationally-ranked duo teamed up to capture two wins in the back draw doubles flight, including a hard-fought thriller in the flight semifinals.
Choo and Gerbasi overcame a tough test from Middle Tennessee State’s Tiffany William and Jesse Grace, prevailing, 6-5 (7), to earn a spot in the flight finals.
The ETSU duo fell in the final round to Kentucky’s Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff and Aldila Sutjiadi, 6-2.
“It was a disappointing end to a successful day of doubles today,” ETSU head coach Travis Sandlant said. “Once again, our ability to get off to a decent start was poor.”
Individually, Choo and Gerbasi advanced to the singles Round of 32, where both suffered setbacks Sunday morning, with Choo falling to Vanderbilt’s Ashleigh Antal, 6-3, 6-3, and Gerbasi losing to Vanderbilt’s Marie Casares, 6-1, 6-2.
“Choo played some solid singles today, but just couldn’t string it together on the big points,” Sandlant said.
ETSU will be back in action Nov. 8 when the team travels to Bradenton, Fla., to compete in the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
