JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 20, 2014) – Playing at home for the first time in nearly three weeks, the ESTU women’s tennis team suffered a 4-2 setback Thursday to reigning Big South Champion Winthrop.
The Bucs (3-6) fell short in doubles play, losing the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. However, Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) came away victorious at No. 2 doubles, teaming up to beat Winthrop’s Ekin Gunaysu and Caitlin Cridland, 8-2.
Brumit, one of two ETSU players to win at singles play, improved her singles record to 5-2 this season, besting Monica Aguado, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) also found the win column for the Bucs, picking up a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles over Tijana Uzelac.
ETSU will continue non-conference play when it visits No. 47 VCU Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10:00 a.m.
