Buccaneers look to seal unbeaten tournament Sunday
ELON, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2013) – After going unbeaten in the first day of the Elon Fall Invitational, the ETSU women’s tennis team did not miss a beat Saturday. In the tournament’s second day of competition, ETSU dropped just one set en route to advancing all four of its participants to the finals of their respective flights.
“It’s great that everyone has the opportunity to play a final tomorrow,” ETSU head coach Travis Sandlant said.
Sophomore Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) advanced to the finals of the A-1 singles flight, while senior Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) earned a spot in the finals of the A-3 singles flight.
Choo will take on Atlantic Sun opponent Isabel von Stryk of USC Upstate Sunday in the final round.
Andreazza, who has dropped just five games in three matches thus far, will face William and Mary’s Sydney Smith in the A-3 finals.
In the B-1 singles flight, ETSU’s Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) and Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) will play one another in the flight’s championship round.
To reach the final round, Espana came from behind to defeat Elon’s Taylor Casey in a marathon, three-set match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Espana and Andreazza will team up to play for the B-1 doubles flight finals Sunday, while Choo and Dahbi will play in the finals of the A-2 doubles flight.
“Giulia [Andreazza] and Sofia [Espana] pulled out a great doubles win today after being down,” Sandlant said. “Hopefully we can close the tournament out tomorrow and possibly sweep it.”
