CULLOWHEE, N.C. (March 21, 2015) — The ETSU women's tennis team clinched its third consecutive win Saturday, besting Western Carolina, 6-1, in Cullowhee, N.C.
The Buccaneers (9-3, 2-0 SoCon) are now 2-0 in Southern Conference play after having beaten Wofford, 7-0, Friday, March 20 to open league play.
ETSU's seventieth-ranked doubles duo of Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) made quick work of the No. 1 Doubles spot, winning, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point for ETSU.
At No. 2 Doubles, Jessical Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Regina Nychytailova (Maripol, Ukraine) edged WCU's Nicole Nielly and Montse Mesalles, 8-7 (7-4).
In singles play, Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverely, Australia) and Markesini picked up wins at the No. 5 and No. 4 spots, respectively, to extend ETSU's advantage to 4-0 and seal the victory for the Bucs.
Choo and Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) went on to earn victories at No. 1 and No. 2 Singles, respectively, with Gerbasi's win coming in come-from-behind fashion. After being edged in the first set, Gerbasi came back to win, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-6.
The Catamounts' (3-8, 1-1 SoCon) lone point came at No. 3 Singles, with Nicole Nielly narrowly defeating ETSU's Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia), 7-5, 6-4.
ETSU will look to extend its win streak as the Bucs open a three-match homestand Friday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m. versus UNC Greensboro.
