Bucs lose another nail-biter, fall at Samford, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 4, 2015) - For the second consecutive match, the ETSU women's tennis team suffered a bitter, 4-3 loss—this time coming on the road to Southern Conference opponent Samford.

Since March 4, the Buccaneers (10-5, 3-2 SoCon) have posted a 4-4 record, with all four setbacks coming by narrow, 4-3 margins.

"This pretty much sums up our season," ETSU coach Travis Sandlant said. "Samford is a great team—the favorites to win—but we went 0-6 in three-set matches this weekend. If we ever want to win, we need to be tougher than this and change this stat. We should be winning these types of matches, but without a team effort, it makes it tough."

ETSU took a 1-0 lead into singles competition after taking the doubles point with wins at all three positions.

Regina Nychytailova (Maripol, Ukraine) extended the Bucs' lead to 2-0 by winning at No. 2 Singles, 6-1, 6-4, marking her fourth consecutive win in singles play.

The Samford Bulldogs (10-7, 4-0 SoCon) then rallied to tie the match at 2-2, winning at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions.

ETSU's Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) notched a win at No. 5 Singles to bring the Bucs within one point of sealing the victory; however, Samford won out, earning wins at No. 1 and No. 6 Singles to clinch the 4-3 victory.

With the match tied at 3-3, the Bulldogs' Savannah Wood rallied from a 3-1, third-set deficit at No. 6 Singles to defeat ETSU's Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverely, Australia) and clinch the match for Samford.

Thursday, April 2, ETSU suffered a 4-3 loss to Chattanooga in Johnson City, the Bucs' first home loss of the season.

The Buccaneers will look to reenter the win column next weekend as they visit USC Upstate Friday, April 10 and Furman Sunday, April 12.
