 Brumit receives Sportsmanship Award

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 22, 2014) – Six ETSU players received Southern Conference postseason honors Wednesday, including senior Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) who was named this year’s recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.

Brumit, last season’s Atlantic Sun Women’s Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year, becomes the third player in program history to receive the Sportsmanship Award, joining Kristy Wagner (’96) and Malissa Thompson (’93). This year, Brumit posted a cumulative spring record of 22-5, including an 11-1 mark in league play.

Meanwhile, Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Regina Nychytailova (Maripol, Ukraine) were each selected to the All-SoCon Singles First Team.

Primarily at No. 1 Singles, Choo recorded a 15-3 (5-2 SoCon) spring singles record, including victories in 12 of her first 13 matches. She has now earned First Team honors in each of her three seasons at ETSU.

In her first season with the Bucs, Nychytailova amassed a 13-4 (5-1 SoCon) record, playing primarily at No. 2 Singles.

Additionally, Choo and Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) were named to the All-SoCon Doubles First Team after posting a 9-3 (3-2 SoCon) record.

Newcomers Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) were each named to the league’s All-Freshman Team after posting respective singles records of 13-4 (4-2 SoCon) and 5-7 (3-2 SoCon).

Markesini and Esguerra also teamed up to go 10-3 (5-0 SoCon) in doubles play, earning spots on the All-SoCon Doubles Second Team.

The Buccaneers (13-5, 5-2 SoCon) will enter the upcoming SoCon Women’s Tennis Championship as the No. 3 seed and will take on sixth-seeded Wofford Friday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m., at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
