CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (May 13, 2016) – The ETSU women’s tennis team’s historic 2016 season came to a close Friday afternoon as No. 3 North Carolina shut out the Bucs, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. With the loss, the Bucs’ record finishes at 20-3, which is the fewest losses the program has ever had in a single season.
“UNC is a great team,” ETSU Head Coach Travis Sandlant said. “We hung with them at times today but we just couldn’t do it for the whole match. We are happy at the level we played and the season that we had.”
After clinching the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 3 positions, the Tar Heels notched three straight set wins in the top three singles spots as well. It is the first time the Bucs have been shutout since their last appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2014 against Duke.
The Bucs are set to bring back five players from this season’s team. However, ETSU will have to replace its three seniors: Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia), Regina Nychytailova (Maripol, Ukraine) and Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela). All three players have been All-SoCon performers the last two seasons and have been leaders on and off the court for ETSU.
“The three seniors that we lose to graduation will always be a huge part of this team,” said Sandlant.
