BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 4, 2018) – The ETSU women’s tennis team hosted Tusculum on Saturday evening at the Bristol Racquet Club. The Bucs came away with a 4-3 win to pick up their first win of the season, while handing Tusculum their first loss.
The Bucs dropped the doubles point, as Tusculum would get the advantage early on, but Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tied the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Franziska Funke. Tusculum’s McCullough sisters won back-to-back matches defeating Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia). Esguerra fought back and won the second set to push a third set, but Tusculum came away with the point. In another three-set battle, Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) won two straight sets after falling behind. She defeated Katarina Majorova 5-7, 6-4, 6-0. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) followed her performance with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Angelica De Vincenzis to even out the match. Freshman Esther Guemes (Madrid, Spain) stepped up for the Bucs and earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Julia Lopez to secure the win for the Bucs.
ETSU will take two weeks off before returning to action. They will head to Akron, Ohio to take on West Virginia on Feb. 17 and Akron on Feb. 18.
