CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 22, 2018) – After getting through the first two rounds of the Southern Conference Tournament in Chattanooga, the ETSU women’s tennis team saw its run come to an end, as the Bucs were out-dueled by No. 1 Furman 4-1 inside the McCallie School.
Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Andrea-Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) were able to pick up the first win in doubles action. They defeated Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Gabby Rodriguez 6-4. Furman evened the playing field after Katty Weymouth and Danni Vines were able to defeat Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) 6-4. The doubles point would come down to No. 1 singles. In a very tight battle for point, Katarina Kozarov and Aryn Greene pulled away with the 7-6 (7-4) win over Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece).
Despite being down 1-0, Markesini evened the match for ETSU, as she raced past Katty Weymouth 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot. Furman quickly broke the tie when Georgie Walker won 6-0, 7-5 over Melissa Esguerra. The Paladins then won back-to-back matches to win the title. Danni Vines defeated Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga 6-2, 6-3 and Katarina Kozarov clinched the match at the No. 1 spot. Kozarov won 7-5, 6-4 over Alory Pereira. Alejandra Morales and Yi Chi Ma were in the middle of their matches before play was stopped.
With the loss, ETSU drops to 13-11, while Furman improves to 20-8 to win their second straight Southern Conference title.
