MACON, Ga. (Oct. 5, 2018) – The ETSU women’s tennis team competed in their first fall tournament of the season this weekend. They played in the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Ga. on Friday and Saturday.
In the Flight A singles, five Bucs competed during this draw. Raquel Amaro was defeated by Selin Devrimci from Florida Southern 6-4, 7-6 (9). She moved into the Flight A consolation draw and won 6-0, 6-1 over Jacksonville’s Alba Conejero. Amaro then defeated Urska Velec from Alabama State 6-1, 6-4. She continued to move on to play USC-Upstate’s Maria Jardim and won 6-1, 6-2.
Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) had a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 win over Malin Buechner of Jacksonville University. She continued to play well after picking up another win over Kennesaw State’s Juliana Castellanos and won 6-1, 6-1. Today she took on her own teammate, Laylo Bakhodirova. The teammates battled, but Bakhodirova came away with the 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win.
Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) defeated Jessica Cantrell from Kennesaw State 6-2, 6-1. She was then defeated by Florida Southern’s Minnie Kim 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) lost her first match 6-3, 6-1 to Madalina Man from Charleston Southern. She moved to the consolation matches and defeated Lea Krajcovicova from Alabama State 6-1, 6-3. She earned another win over Victoria Saldh from USC-Upstate and won 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6). She continued to battle throughout the day and took on Nevena Georgieva from Charleston Southern and fell 6-2, 6-3.
Lastly in the Flight A singles draw, Laylo Bakhodirova competed for the Bucs. She won 6-3, 6-1 over Alabama State’s Reka Szentes. She won against teammate Morales and then had a match against Jacksonville’s Harriet Hamilton. She had another win over Harriet Hamilton from Jacksonville University 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. She will play Katie Sidor from Mercer on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
One Buc competed in the Flight B singles. Yunen Elizarraras had a strong first outing after defeating Hannah Daniel from Georgia Southern 6-0, 6-1. She then defeated Natalija Popovic from Florida Southern 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. She took on conference foe Celine Schepers from Mercer, but was defeated 6-0, 7-5.
Esther Guemes competed in Flight C singles and won 6-3, 6-0 over Daniela Campo from Middle Georgia State. She took on Gabby Hesse from Florida Southern and won 6-1, 7-5, but then was defeated by Celia Montero Estevan from Troy 6-2, 6-2.
The Bucs had a strong outing in doubles action. In the Flight A doubles draw, Yi Chi Ma and Alejandra Morales defeated Alara Hollyfield and Katie Sidor from Mercer 6-4. They moved on to pick up their second win over Alabama State’s Urska Velec and Reka Szentes with a 6-2 win. They moved on to play Cristina Moll and Elena Tendero and won 6-0. They also won another doubles match after defeating Chunxi Guo and Tingting Pei from Troy 6-4. The pair will take on Jacksonville University’s Alba Conejero and Harriet Hamilton on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Raquel Amaro and Laylo Bakodirova won their first doubles match together. They defeated Alabama State’s Gabriela Lackova and Lea Krajcovicova 6-3. The pair moved on to take on Nevena Georgieva and Tiffany Pyritz from Charleston Southern and won 6-4, but then fell 6-4 to Alba Conjero and Harriet Hamilton from Jacksonville University.
Esther Guemes and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga competed in the Flight B doubles. They won 7-5 over Matea Mihaljevic and Chloe Kabamba. They were then defeated by Troy’s pair of Maria Casas Blas and Celia Montero Estevan 6-4.
