RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 16, 2019) – The ETSU women’s tennis team officially kicked off the 2019 season today at NC State. The Wolfpack defeated the Bucs 7-0 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
In doubles action, Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) took on No. 22 ranked Anna Rogers and Alana Smith, but fell to the ranked duo 6-2. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezeula) paired for the first time and dropped their match 6-3 to Liz Norman and Bianca Moldovan. Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) were in the middle of a 5-5 battle at the No. 3 doubles spot, but it was unfinished due to the Wolfpack clinching the doubles point.
Morales took on another ranked opponent in No. 111 Alana Smith, but fell 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles spot. Pascual-Larrinaga battled at the No. 3 spot, but was defeated by Liz Norman 6-3, 7-5. NC State’s Amanda Rebol would clinch the match for the Wolfpack after a win over Elizarraras. Elizarraras was able to take the first set 6-1, but Rebol fought back to win the match 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Bakhodirova handed No. 23 ranked Anna Rogers a loss in a set after earning a 7-5 win, but Rogers would win the overall match 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Lastly Ma and Amaro were the final two singles to finish. Ma fought through a three-set battle, but fell 6-4, 5-7, 10-3 to Natalia Nikolopoulou. Amaro had one of the longest singles matches of the day, but was defeated by Bianca Moldovan 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
The ETSU women’s tennis team returns to action next Sunday, Jan. 27 at Virginia Tech. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
