BOONE, N.C. (Feb. 13, 2019) – The ETSU women’s tennis team made the short trip over the mountain, to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers, on Wednesday afternoon at the Deer Valley Racquet Club. ETSU was edged by Appalachian State 4-3, as the Bucs fall to 4-3, while the Mountaineers improve to 2-1.
Appalachian State was able to take the first match in doubles action. Soon after they clinched the point with another doubles win to take a 1-0 lead. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) tied the match 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over Maria Jose Zacarias. The Mountaineers took a 3-1 lead with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot. Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) fell to Teodora Sevo in a three-set battle of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) won the first set 5-7, but fell 6-4, 6-4 in the following sets to Kate Earnhardt. Freshman Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) improved to 6-1 on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jeannez Daniel at the No. 4 spot. Appalachian State’s Heidi Swope defeated Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the match. Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) earned a hard fought battle at the No. 5 spot and defeated Rebecca Morse 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
The Bucs return to action this Sunday, Feb. 17 when they take on Alabama. The match is set for 11:00 a.m.
